Animated Movie Dog Driving Cars 90s

Are you a dog-owner looking to buy a new car that is good for traveling with your dog as well as the whole family? Simon Benson, director of motoring services at AA Cars , shares his advice on what to look out for when choosing a car and which cars to consider if you own a dog.

It's important to take each member of your family into account when deciding on a new motor. You wouldn't buy a car without considering your partner's legroom or your kids' space in the backseat, so why shouldn't you give your dog the same thought?

The quintessential image of a dog's head hanging out of a car window, tongue lolling out of its mouth while cruising down country lanes, is starting to look a bit dated, not to mention unsafe! With the rising popularity of compact cars, you could find yourself cramming your canine friend into an uncomfortably small space unless you take time to think about their needs before buying.

Bear in mind the breed and size of your dog when shopping for a new car - obviously Great Danes and Saint Bernards aren't best suited to Minis or Smart Cars, but you should also try to anticipate the potential size any new puppies might grow to. Although a mid-size car might seem like a good idea when your Labrador is still a few weeks old, you might find yourself regretting the decision a year down the line.

There are six key factors that responsible dog owners should take into consideration when choosing a car:

1. Space – Sufficient interior space is always number one on the list. Your car should have enough space for your dog to lie down and stretch its legs, and you should also look out for a motor with plenty of room to fit a dog cage or a dog guard so your dog can travel safely in the back.

2. Suspension – Suspension helps ensure your dog doesn't get travel sick – a smooth drive will keep them relaxed on the road and guarantee a happier hound upon arrival. Look out for models with soft suspension and light steering so your dog can enjoy a more comfortable journey.

3. Safety – The safety of your pup is of utmost importance. Dogs should be restrained in a vehicle so they don't distract the driver or injure themselves if you have to brake suddenly, so a car with a child safety lock, dog guard or harness can prevent accidents.

4. Ventilation – You'll need to make sure your car has electric windows that you can wind down easily from the front, as dogs are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses when travelling in hot vehicles.

5. Suitable material – While plastic seat covers will help protect your car from stains and hairs, vehicles made from suitable dog-proof material will make your car interior even easier to manage. Your boot should be lined with sturdy, easy-to-clean material incase of any accidents.

6. Low loading sills - Cars with low or large loading sills in the boot will make it easier for dogs to jump into unassisted, particularly as your dog gets older and less agile.

There are many great cars for dogs on the market, both new and used. Below is a list of suitable cars for our four legged friends.

BEST CARS FOR DOG-OWNERS

Honda Civic Tourer - The Honda Civic Tourer is an estate with a big boot and underfloor storage, which is great for creating extra space for your dog or hiding your food shopping so they can't get at it. It's suitable for dog guards, and you can find a range of inexpensive lip protectors for it, too.

Volvo V60 - The Volvo V60 is a practical car with plenty of space for one or two dogs. It's incredibly pet-friendly, with rear climate control to keep them cool and fantastic safety features including an optional dog barrier and rear tie-downs.

Ford S-Max - This minivan is one of Ford's largest vehicles. With seven seats, this car is a good fit for a large family with one dog or a smaller family with a pair of pups, as you can choose to fold down a few of the seats.

Land Rover Discovery - This Land Rover has ample space and great air suspension, making it perfect for dog owners. The split tailgate makes it easier for the dog to jump into the car unaided, and it's also kitted out with accessories such as partitions and boot liners so it is easy to keep clean.

Skoda Superb Estate - The Skoda Superb Estate has a spacious boot, low loading sills and an excellent dog safety range. With a four-wheel drive option, the car ensures a comfortable and relaxing journey for all of it passengers, whether human or hound.

Citroën C4 Cactus - The Citroën C4 Cactus offers a smooth ride with airbump panels which provide extra protection in the event of a crash. The rear windows are designed with a unique hinge so they open outwards instead of sliding downwards – so there is no worry of your dog getting it's head stuck in the window.
